Yes, it's pretty amazing. And it must've been even more incredible before Charles Scammon showed up to the lagoon in 1857 and decimated the California gray whale population. Prior to the 1800s, there were an estimated 120,000 gray whales migrating between the Arctic and Baja. The whales were driven nearly to extinction with perhaps fewer than 1,000 by 1940. Today, there are around 20,000 gray whales. It's remarkable to see 2-3 thousand in the lagoon. It must've been really amazing to have witnessed 5-10 thousand before the whaling ships arrived.
