I love Chamonix. Amazing place. The last time I was there, we were preparing to ride the gondola to the top. It was August and very warm in the valley -- almost 90F (32C). My partner suggested that we put on several layers of clothing, plus sweaters. I scoffed at the suggestion and advised her that I grew up near the Sierra Nevada range and that it would maybe be 65F to 70F (17C to 21C) at the top. In my certitude, I wore only a T-shirt. My partner wore a couple of shirts and a sweater, and brought a pair of back-up sweaters for good measure. We arrived at the top, and I was shocked that the thermometer read 32F (0C) at the top. On top of that there was a stiff breeze that brought the windchill down close to 0F. Brrrrr. The views were spectacular, but I almost turned into a popsicle. And for years afterward, whenever I confidently advised her of something that was perhaps a bit dubious, she would reply, "Oh, just like that time on the gondola to Mount Blanc?"
