I actually think there was a ton of trade, as well as lots of mixing and interacting between people and cultures of faraway lands. Just because you couldn't buy a cheap airline ticket from Cairo to Rome or Mumbai to Constantinople, didn't mean that the world was stagnant and people, goods, philosophies and religions stayed put. I think that's the big lesson of this shipwreck.
