He had severe clinical depression and had been checked into Mayo Clinic twice for extended periods during the final three our four years of his life. There he underwent treatment for alcoholism, as well as electro-shock treatment for depression. Didn't work. He also may have had CTE from his ambulance being struck by a mortar shell in WWI, as well as the two plane crashes he survived in Africa. I'm sure neither of those incidents helped.
